A Universal Beam, also known as an “I-beam” or “H-beam,” is a type of structural steel member commonly used in construction and engineering applications. It is characterized by its distinctive “I” or “H” shape when viewed in cross-section. Universal Beams are designed to carry and distribute loads primarily along their horizontal axis, making them suitable for a wide range of structural applications such as building frames, bridges, industrial structures, and more.
The design of a Universal Beam allows it to efficiently support heavy vertical loads by distributing these loads across the flanges, which are located farther from the neutral axis of the section. The arrangement of the flanges and the web helps resist bending and deflection when the beam is subjected to various forces. Additionally, the symmetrical
shape of the beam allows it to be used in multiple orientations, making it versatile for different applications.
Universal Beams come in various sizes and dimensions, with standardized measurements that include the height of the beam (the distance between the top and bottom flanges), the width of the flanges, and the thickness of the web and flanges.
