Carbon steel, also known as plain carbon steel, is an iron-carbon alloy with a carbon content of less than 2.11%. Apart from carbon, it typically contains small proportions of silicon, manganese, sulfur, and phosphorus.

A36 is an American standard carbon structural plate, which implements the standards ASTM A36/A36M.
This standard applies to riveted, bolted, and welded structures for bridges and buildings, as well as structural steel quality carbon steel shapes, plates, and bars for general purposes.
